As you decide where to donate your ‘dasvandh’ this year, please remember Guru Nanak Foundation of America (GNFA) for its Building Fund. GNFA is tax exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code and all (100%) donations made to GNFA qualify for tax exemption as Charitable Organization. For a long time sadh sangat of this gurudwara has been dreaming of a new and bigger building to accommodate the aspirations of ever increasing numbers and the needs for a Khalsa School and a charitable medical dispensary. During the year, the current management has put this desire on a fast track and the new Capital Project Committee is moving forward in clearing many of the objections from various local bodies and obtained the required permissions. As it stand today we are in the process of submitting final plans and drawings by March 2012 and get building permits. In view of all these efforts and developments, the dream is closer to be converted into reality now. At this stage we need the help of sadh sangat and well wishers to achieve it. We need lot of funds to the extent of about 5-6 million dollars. We, therefore, appeal to you all to please open up your heart and the wallet and contribute as liberally as possible to participate in this gigantic task (Mahan Yagya). Your contribution will be duly acknowledged and used strictly on the building only. You may pay in one lump sum amount or pay regularly in installments of whatever amount. You may pay cash, check or through credit card. No amount is too small or too big. Contribute as much as you can. We appeal to you to direct your charitable contribution to GNFA and get credit for tax purposes for year 2011. Also request your friends and family to contribute to this pious task and receive blessings of Waheguru ji. May Waheguru ji bless you all for this share of yours, in the new building of Gurudwara Sahib.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Kunwar Singh Goomer

Chairman

Prabhjot Singh Kohli

Secretary

Shaheedi Divas – Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur – Friday Nov 25 and Sunday Nov 27

Featured

Sees Diya par Sirar na Diay GNFA will be conducting special divans on Friday November 25, 2011 and Sunday November 27, 2011 to commemorate the Shaheedi Divas of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of the Sikhs. His life spanned 1 April 1621 to 11 November 1675. He became the ninth Guru on 20 March 1665.

Guru Ji’s refusal to accept Islam by the order of The Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb ultimately led to his arrest in July 1675. He was placed in captivity for more than three months and was taken to Delhi in November 1675. The Mughals placed him in chains and he was ordered to be tortured until he would convert to Islam. Ultimately, Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded in public on 11 November 1675 at Chandni Chowk. The exact location of his beheading is marked by Gurdwara Sis Ganj in Delhi.

The Guru’s body was publicly presented in the streets of Delhi and it was announced that nobody was permitted to remove the Guru’s dead body. Strong guards were posted to prevent its being taken away.

A dust storm entered Delhi which presented an opportunity to Lakhi Shah and a few of his tribesman. He loaded cotton on some carts and took them towards the location where Guru Ji’s body was laying. He loaded the body on the cart, concealed it and took it to his hut outside of Delhi. He placed a heap of firewood inside his hut, placed Guru Ji’s body on the heap then covered it with more wood. He then set his house ablaze. Thus, Guru Ji’s body was cremated secretly by Lakhi Shah and his companions. Gurdwara Rakab Ganj, stands at the place where Guru Tegh Bahadur’s headless body was cremated.

Another follower, Bhai Jaita, secretly transported Guru Ji’s severed head in a bag to Anandpur Sahib, a distance nearly 400 kilometers away where he presented it to Guru Ji’s son, Gobind Rai. Guru Ji’s head was subsequently cremated.

Due to Guru Ji’s refusal to convert to Islam, the threatened forced conversion of the Kashmiri Hindus was thwarted.
