What is Bandi Chhor Divas?
Bandi Chorr Diwas is a day on which Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Guru, was released with 52 Rajas from Gwalior Prison.   The word “Bandi”, translated from Punjabi into English as “Imprisoned” (or “Prisoner”), “Chhor” as “Release,” and “Divas” as “Day,” rendering “Bandi Chhor Divas” from Punjabi into English as “Prisoners’ Release Day.”

Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali are not the same
Following his release, Guru Hargobind Sahib arrived in Amritsar in the midst of the Diwali festival, and hence, Bandi Chhor Divas is often associated with Diwali.  Noting this however, Bandi Chhor Diwas and Diwali are separate festivals and do not occur on the same day.  Diwali is a Hindu festival known as “the festival of lights”.  It was under celebration when Guru Ji reached Amritsar.

Please join the Saad Sangat to celebrate this event.
